Are You Woke or Not Quite Awake...?

And on June 14, 1965, Martin Luther King Jr, gave a commencement address called Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution at Oberlin College.  He said: "There is nothing more tragic than to sleep through a revolution...The wind of change is blowing, and we see in our day and our age a significant development." He added: "The great challenge facing every individual graduating today is to remain awake through this social revolution."

Being ‘Woke’ is defined as being socially aware of and diligently mindful of important facts and issues regarding racial and social injustice.  However, many who are ‘woke’ are not quite awake…

Ask yourself – are you WOKE or NOT QUITE AWAKE…

 You are “WOKE” if you…

  • Understand and accept the seriousness of the plight of African and Black Americans and dedicating yourself to believing that they live in a world very different from White people.

  • See the inequality and the poverty of others and understand the impact it has on their advancement in the workplace.

  • Are aware of racial discrimination and its consequences AND understand the unfairness that permeates from the levels of privilege in today’s society.

You are Not quite Awake if you…

  • Say you understand and accept the seriousness of the plight of African and Black Americans and then USE RACE TO DESCRIBE ANY ENCOUNTER YOU HAVE WITH BLACK FOLKS!

  • See the inequality and the poverty of others and believe it has no bearing on the advancement or lack thereof in today’s society.

  • Feel the need to use racial terms to describe your friends, colleagues, and others

  • Still use terms like ‘cotton-picking’, ‘grandfathered’, ‘getting gypped’, or ‘being sold down the river.’

Being WOKE is about being aware of the lack of equity and equality in today’s world. Especially when politicians are so focused on neutralizing overt racism.
